Why we collect your personal information
We collect, use and hold personal information so we can provide legal services to you, meet our professional obligations, and manage our practice. This includes complying with anti-money laundering, taxation and other legal requirements.
We may collect personal information directly from you, or from other people and organisations where necessary to carry out your instructions. This may include lenders, insurers, accountants, real estate agents, government agencies (including councils and LINZ), and other parties involved in a transaction or matter.
Who may receive your information
Your information is treated private and confidential however, we may use and disclose your personal information where this is necessary to carry out your instructions, including sharing information with lenders, insurers, accountants, other professional advisers, counterparties and their advisers, regulatory authorities, and service providers who assist us. We will only do so where reasonably required for the services we provide or where required by law.
Third party providers
You authorise us to collect personal information directly from you and indirectly from data agencies and public sources in order for us to fulfil your instructions. This includes AML/CFT due diligence, and onboarding. We use third party providers, including APLYiD, to assist with our anti-money laundering compliance. You further consent to J & Co Legal Limited storing your information on servers hosted by Microsoft (and other businesses) and accessing your information.
Whether collection is authorised or required by law
In some cases, we are required or authorised by law to collect, use or disclose your personal information, including under anti-money laundering and taxation legislation, and our professional obligations as lawyers.
You may request access to your personal information and ask for it to be corrected at any time. We will deal with your request in accordance with the Privacy Act, subject to any legal restrictions.
If you do not provide information we reasonably require, we may not be able to act for you or continue acting.
